A 33-year old man was found to have a second SARS-CoV-2 infection some four-and-a-half months after he was diagnosed with his buy kamagra oral jelly online uk first, from which he recovered. The man, who showed no symptoms, was diagnosed when he returned to Hong Kong after a trip to Spain.I am a virologist with expertise in coronaviruses and enteroviruses, and I’ve been curious about reinfections since the beginning of the pandemic. Because people infected with SARS-CoV-2 can often test positive for the virus for weeks to months, likely due to the sensitivity of the test and leftover RNA fragments, the only way to really answer the question of buy kamagra oral jelly online uk reinfection is by sequencing the viral genome at the time of each infection and looking for differences in the genetic code. There is no published peer-review report on this man – only a press release from the University of Hong Kong – although reports say the work will be published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. Here I address some questions raised by the current news reports. Why wasn’t the man immune to reinfection?.

Immunity to endemic coronaviruses – those that buy kamagra oral jelly online uk cause symptoms of the common cold – is relatively short-lived, with reinfections occurring even within the same season. So it isn’t completely surprising that reinfection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, might be possible.Immunity is complex and involves multiple mechanisms in the body. That includes the generation of antibodies – through what’s known as the adaptive immune response – and through the actions of T-cells, which can help to educate the immune system and buy kamagra oral jelly online uk to specifically eliminate virus-infected cells. However, researchers around the world are still learning about immunity to this virus and so can’t say for sure, based on this one case, whether reinfection will be a cause for broad concern.[Get the best of The Conversation, every weekend.

Sign up for our weekly newsletter.]How different is the second strain that buy kamagra oral jelly online uk infected the Hong Kong man?. “Strain” has a particular definition when referring to viruses. Often a different buy kamagra oral jelly online uk “strain” is a virus that behaves differently in some way. The coronavirus that infected this man in Europe is likely not a new strain.A STAT News article reports that the genetic make up of the sequenced virus from the patient’s second infection had 24 nucleotides – building blocks of the virus’s RNA genome – that differed from the SARS-CoV-2 isolate that infected him the first time.SARS-CoV-2 has a genome that is made up of about 30,000 nucleotides, so the virus from the man’s second infection was roughly 0.08% different than the original in genome sequence.

That shows that the virus that caused the second infection was new. Not a recurrence of the first virus. The man was asymptomatic – what does buy kamagra oral jelly online uk that mean?. The man wasn’t suffering any of the hallmark COVID-19 symptoms which might mean he had some degree of protective immunity to the second infection because he didn’t seem sick. But this buy kamagra oral jelly online uk is difficult to prove.I see three possible explanations.

The first is that the immunity he gained from the first infection protected him and allowed for a mild second infection. Another possibility is that the infection was mild because he was presymptomatic, and went on to develop symptoms in the coming buy kamagra oral jelly online uk days. Finally, sometimes infections with SARS-CoV-2 are asymptomatic – at the moment it is difficult to determine whether this was due to the differences in the virus or in the host. What can we say about reinfection based on this one case?. Only that it seems to be possible after enough time has elapsed buy kamagra oral jelly online uk.

We do not know how likely or often it is to occur.Should people who have recovered from COVID-19 still wear a mask?. As we are still learning about how humans buy kamagra oral jelly online uk develop immunity to SARS-CoV-2 after infection, my recommendation is for continued masking, hand hygiene and distancing practices, even after recovery from COVID-19, to protect against the potential for reinfection.Megan Culler Freeman is a Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh. The antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, touted by the president, received emergency authorization from the federal Food and Drug Administration, only to have the decision revoked several weeks later out of concern it could cause harm.Convalescent plasma, which uses blood products from people recovered from COVID-19 to treat those who are still ill, was given to more than buy kamagra tablets 100,000 patients in an expanded-access program and made widely available through another emergency authorization — even though scientists remain uncertain of its benefits.Regeneron and the pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly and Co. Have both requested emergency use authorization for their monoclonal antibody therapies, even as scientists say such approval could jeopardize enrollment in the randomized controlled trials that will prove whether or how well they work. So far, about 2,500 people have enrolled in the Regeneron trials, with about 2,000 of them receiving buy kamagra tablets the therapy, a company spokesperson said. Others have received the treatment through so-called compassionate use programs, though the company wouldn’t say how many.Last week, the National Institutes of Health paused the Lilly antibody trial after an independent monitoring board raised safety concerns.“With all of the information swirling around in the media, it’s hard for patients to make good decisions — and for doctors to make those decisions,” said Dr. Benjamin Rome, a general internist buy kamagra tablets and health policy researcher at Harvard Medical School’s Portal program.

Early phase 1 clinical trials focus largely on safety, while larger phase 2 and phase 3 trials determine efficacy. Any experimental treatment raises the possibility of serious side effects.Ideally, health care providers would provide such information about buy kamagra tablets treatments and risks unprompted. But during a pandemic, especially in a high-stress environment, they might not, Totten noted.“It’s important to be sort of insistent,” she said.

They should ask about financial buy kamagra tablets compensation for participation. Many patients in COVID-19 trials are paid modest amounts for their time and travel. And they should think about how any treatment fits into their larger system of values and goals, said Angie Fagerlin, a professor and the chair of the population health sciences department at the University of Utah.“What are the pros and what are the cons?. € Fagerlin buy kamagra tablets said.

For Mutter, helping advance science was a big reason he agreed to enroll in the Regeneron trial.“The main thing that made me interested in it was in order for therapeutics to move forward, they need people,” he said.

€œAt a time when there’s so much we can’t control, this would be a way to come up with some kind of a solution.”That decision led him to Fred Hutch, which is collaborating on two buy kamagra tablets Regeneron trials, one for prevention of COVID-19 and one for treatment of the disease.“It was a six-hour visit,” he said. €œIt’s two hours to get the infusion. It’s a very slow IV drip.”Mutter was the second person enrolled in buy kamagra tablets the treatment trial at Fred Hutch, said Dr. Shelly Karuna, a co-principal investigator. The study is testing high and low doses of the monoclonal antibody cocktail against a placebo.“I am struck by the profound altruism of the people we buy kamagra tablets are screening,” she said.Mutter isn’t sure how he contracted COVID-19.

He and his family have been careful about masks and social distancing — and critical of others who weren’t.“The irony now is that we’re the ones who got sick,” said Mutter, whose wife, Gina Mutter, 54, is also ill.Mutter knows he has a 1-in-3 chance that he got a placebo rather than one of two active treatment dosages, but he said he was willing to take that chance. His wife didn’t enroll in the trial.“I said, there’s some buy kamagra tablets risks involved. We’re taking one for the team here. I don’t think we both need to do that,” he said.So far, Mutter has struggled with a persistent cough buy kamagra tablets and lingering fatigue. This story can be republished for free (details). During the first presidential debate of 2020, President Donald Trump touted his efforts to curb skyrocketing drug prices and declared that insulin is now “so cheap, it’s like water.” The response on social media was swift, and divided, with some people sharing pharmacy bills showing thousands of dollars they’d spent on insulin, while others boasted of newfound savings. The next day, a self-described progressive political action committee called Change Now jumped into the fray by releasing an ad that circulated on Facebook attacking Trump and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) on this issue. In the 30-second ad, a North Carolina woman what does kamagra oral jelly do in her 30s explains she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 4.“Donald Trump and Thom Tillis buy kamagra tablets opposed legislation that would lower the price of insulin and other prescription drugs,” she says. €œPeople with diabetes can’t afford to wait for Trump and Tillis to fight for us buy kamagra tablets.

This election cycle — coinciding with a looming threat to the Affordable Care Act and millions of people losing jobs and employer-sponsored health insurance during the pandemic — the high price of prescription drugs has gained new significance.Tillis is in one of the most heated Senate races in the country and has been repeatedly criticized by his opponent for receiving more than $400,000 in campaign contributions from the pharmaceutical and health product industries. Across the country, many voters say lowering prescription drug costs should be the top health priority for elected officials. So, did Trump and Tillis buy kamagra tablets really oppose policies that would accomplish that goal?. We decided to take a closer look.It turns out they’ve both opposed certain pieces of legislation that could have lowered the price of insulin and other prescription drugs, but they’ve also offered alternatives.

The question is how aggressive those alternatives are and how many Americans would buy kamagra tablets benefit from them. Don't Miss A Story Subscribe to KHN’s free Weekly Edition newsletter. Opposing the Strongest buy kamagra tablets ReformsChange Now pointed to two congressional bills to support the ad’s claim. One opposed by Trump, and the other by Tillis. The first bill, known as H.R. 3, passed the House buy kamagra tablets in December 2019, largely due to Democratic votes.

It contains three main elements. Decreasing out-of-pocket costs for people on Medicare, penalizing pharmaceutical companies that raise the price of drugs faster than the rate of inflation and — the most aggressive and controversial feature — allowing the federal government, which administers Medicare, to buy kamagra tablets negotiate the price of certain drugs, including insulin. It also requires manufacturers to offer those agreed-on prices to private insurers, extending the benefits to a wider swath of Americans.Stacie Dusetzina, an associate professor of health policy at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, called it “the broadest-reaching policy that has been put forward” on drug pricing.“While a lot of reform has focused on Medicare beneficiaries, that misses many insulin users,” Dusetzina said. €œH.R. 3 does the most to affect prices for young consumers, like the woman in the ad.”At the time, Trump vowed to veto that bill, saying the price controls it imposed “would likely undermine access to lifesaving medications” by decreasing the incentive for companies to innovate.

When we checked in with the Trump campaign about the ad, a spokesperson reiterated this position, adding that the president continues to seek better legislative options. The House bill in question, though, never made it to the president’s desk because the Senate didn’t take it up. Instead, the Senate Finance Committee proposed its own bill, which brings us to the second piece of legislation cited by Change Now.Known as the Prescription Drug Pricing Reduction Act of 2019, the Senate bill echoes two aims of the House proposal. Decreasing out-of-pocket costs for people on Medicare and putting an inflation-based cap on some drug prices. That bill, too, stalled, with several Republican senators wary of the inflation cap. Among them was Tillis, who expressed concern that the measure could hamper innovation. So, it’s true that Trump and Tillis have both opposed legislation that could lower the cost of insulin and other prescription drugs. Tillis’ campaign highlighted an alternative bill the senator co-sponsored to target drug costs. Let’s break them down one at a time. One of Trump’s orders aims to have Federally Qualified Health Centers provide insulin and EpiPens at a discounted rate to the low-income individuals they serve. These centers, however, are already required to offer sliding-scale payments, and a full discount to patients who earn below the federal poverty line, said Rachel Sachs, an associate professor of law at Washington University in St. Louis, who tracks drug-pricing laws.Another order deals with the importation of drugs from Canada, where they are often cheaper. Although the order specifically excludes biologic drugs, including insulin, the administration has requested proposals from private companies on how insulin could be safely brought in from other countries. The president also issued a particularly ambitious order that seeks to tie the price Medicare pays for drugs to a lower international reference price.

The Trump administration, however, hasn’t released final regulations to implement that policy, which could take years. If implemented, the policy is expected to be challenged in court by the drug industry.Perhaps the most notable measure on insulin at the moment, experts said, is a federal demonstration project that Medicare plans can voluntarily opt into, to cap the monthly copay for insulin at $35 for some seniors. The project is slated to begin in January 2021, but its long-term future is uncertain, Sachs said, because it relies on parts of the Affordable Care Act, which could be struck down by a Supreme Court ruling later this year.In Congress, Tillis and five other Republican senators introduced an alternative drug-pricing bill last December, called the Lower Costs, More Cures Act.Tillis believes this is “the better option,” campaign spokesperson Andrew Romeo said, because “in addition to helping control drug prices, the legislation also seeks to preserve America’s capacity to research and develop lifesaving medications.” It includes a monthly cap on insulin copays for Medicare beneficiaries and requires manufacturers to disclose prices in consumer ads.But experts said Tillis’ proposal is weaker than other options before the House and Senate. It doesn’t include an inflation cap, Sachs said, and the bill’s benefit would likely be limited to some seniors on Medicare, leaving out the more than 150 million Americans covered by private insurance.Jason Roberts, an associate professor of political science at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, said the bill is largely symbolic.“Tillis is getting hit for not supporting a bill that could move,” Roberts said. €œInstead, he introduces something that has no chance of going anywhere, and he knows that.

But it’s a way of trying to deflect that criticism without getting a lot accomplished.”Our RulingAn ad sponsored by a progressive political action committee claims that Trump and Tillis have opposed legislation that would decrease the cost of insulin and other prescription drugs.Based on the two pieces of drug-pricing legislation Change Now points to, that’s accurate. Trump and Tillis have voiced opposition to prominent bills that experts say could decrease the cost of insulin for a broad group of Americans. However, both politicians have also proposed alternative policies to lower the price of insulin and other prescription drugs. Most of their proposals have not taken effect yet and are largely targeted at seniors. We rate the ad’s claim Mostly True. 14, 2020Health Resources and Services Administration, Health Center Program Compliance Manual, accessed Oct. 14, 2020 The Trump campaign provided a long list of actions taken by his administration to curb the high costs of medication, including a flurry of executive orders related to insulin and prescription drugs.

Aneri Pattani.

By Cara Roberts Murez HealthDay Reporter http://www.amisdepasteur.fr/where-can-i-buy-kamagra-jelly/ WEDNESDAY, discount kamagra review Oct. 21, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Scientists knew that dangerous T-cells lived in the pancreases of people with type 1 diabetes, but a new study shows they also take up residence in the pancreases discount kamagra review of healthy individuals. Researchers from the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in California used a new staining technique to show where these cells had gathered in human tissue discount kamagra review samples. They were surprised that even tissue from healthy people showed these cells in high numbers in the pancreas. What's the discount kamagra review difference?.

Even though healthy people have these immune system cells, people with type 1 diabetes have T-cells that are close to or infiltrate cell clusters inside the pancreas discount kamagra review. Beta cells that live in these clusters make insulin to regulate blood sugar, but in people with type 1 diabetes the T-cells kill those beta cells. "These T-cells are like predators," discount kamagra review said senior study author Dr. Matthias von discount kamagra review Herrath, from the La Jolla Institute. "And we always thought that beta cells would die if the predator was there.

But it turns out the discount kamagra review T-cells are already there. They just seem to be waiting for a signal to attack." Though previous research has shown that healthy people have these T-cells in their bloodstream, it wasn't known they would travel to the pancreas, discount kamagra review according to the researchers. "We can't say that these are the only culprits in type 1 diabetes," von Herrath said in an institute news release. "But these discount kamagra review T-cells are the prime suspects." What this does for diabetes research is add evidence to a theory that type 1 diabetes is not caused by malfunctioning T-cells attacking beta cells, but rather that the body is already making these T-cells and something in the pancreas triggers the attack. Von Herrath said this could mean that an effective type 1 discount kamagra review diabetes therapy would need to target the pancreas.

Researchers plan to study how the discount kamagra review T-cells behave, as well as whether other proteins in the cell clusters might draw T-cell attacks. "We still have so many questions," Christine Bender, study co-author and a postdoctoral fellow in the von Herrath Lab, said in the release. The company will plead guilty discount kamagra review to three counts, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and violating federal anti-kickback laws, the Justice Department officials to the AP. The plea bargain does not absolve company executives or owners, including members of the Sackler family, from criminal liability. The settlement discount kamagra review is the federal government's biggest win in seeking to hold a major drug company responsible for an addiction and overdose crisis tied to more than 470,000 deaths in the U.S. Since 2000, discount kamagra review the AP says.

As part of the deal, the company will admit that it misled the Drug Enforcement Administration by falsely claiming it had an effective program to avoid drug diversion and by sending misleading information to the agency to increase the company's manufacturing quotas, the officials said. A Justice Department official told the AP that Purdue had been representing to the DEA that it had "robust controls" to avoid opioid diversion but instead had been "disregarding red flags their own systems discount kamagra review were sending up." Purdue will also admit to violating federal anti-kickback laws by paying doctors to write more prescriptions for the company's opioids and for using electronic health records to influence the prescription of pain medication. The company will pay $225 discount kamagra review million to the government, which is part of a $2 billion criminal forfeiture. Also, Purdue faces a $3.54 billion criminal fine. That money will most discount kamagra review likely not be fully collected because it will be part of a bankruptcy, which includes other creditors.

Purdue will discount kamagra review also agree to $2.8 billion in damages to get more resolve its civil liability, the AP reported. Purdue would become a public benefit company, meaning it would be run by a discount kamagra review trust that has to balance the trust's interests against those of the American people and public health, the officials told the AP. Dementia.

Translational Research &. Clinical Interventions, reports that elderly Japanese men and women who produce equol -- a metabolite of dietary soy created by certain types of gut bacteria -- display lower levels of white matter lesions within the brain."White matter lesions are significant risk factors for cognitive decline, dementia and all-cause mortality," said lead author Akira Sekikawa, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of epidemiology at Pitt Public Health. "We found 50% more white matter lesions in people who cannot produce equol compared to people who can produce it, which is a surprisingly huge effect."To obtain this result, Sekikawa's research team measured equol levels within the blood of 91 elderly Japanese participants with normal cognition. Participants were sorted by their equol production status, and then six to nine years later underwent brain imaging to detect levels of white matter lesions and deposits of amyloid-beta, which is the suspected molecular cause of Alzheimer's disease. The researchers found that while equol production did not appear to impact levels of amyloid-beta deposited within the brain, it was associated with reduced white matter lesion volumes. Sekikawa's team also discovered that high levels of isoflavones -- soy nutrients that are metabolized into equol -- had no effect on levels of white matter lesions or amyloid-beta when equol wasn't produced.According to Sekikawa, the ability to produce equol from soy isoflavones may be the key to unlocking protective health benefits from a soy-rich diet, and his team has previously shown that equol production is associated with a lower risk of heart disease.

As heart disease is strongly associated with cognitive decline and dementia, equol production could help protect the aging brain as well as the heart. advertisement Epidemiological studies in Japan, where soy is regularly consumed, have shown that dietary intake of soy isoflavones has been linked to a lower risk for heart disease and dementia. However, most clinical trials in America have failed to show this.Sekikawa believes that this discrepancy may be due to the microbiome -- 40-70% of Japanese harbor gut bacteria that can convert dietary isoflavones into equol compared to only 20-30% of Americans.Sekikawa said that equol supplements could one day be combined with existing diet-based prevention strategies that appear to lower the risk of dementia, particularly the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and Mediterranean diets.Though Sekikawa hopes to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of equol supplements in a future randomized clinical trial, in the meantime, he urges caution to anyone who might be tempted to purchase equol supplements to stave off dementia."This type of study always catches people's attention, but we cannot prove that equol protects against dementia until we get a randomized clinical trial with sufficient evidence," he said.Additional authors on this research include Aya Higashiyama, M.D., Ph.D., Masafumi Ihara, M.D., Ph.D., Makoto Watanabe, M.D., Ph.D., Chikage Kakuta, M.A., Yoshihioro Kokubo, M.D., Ph.D., and Yoshihiro Miyamoto, M.D., Ph.D., all of the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center in Japan. Coronavirus cases kamagra now co uk were growing by 5% or more, based on a weekly average to smooth out daily reporting, in 21 states and Washington D.C.

As of Saturday, according to a CNBC analysis of data collected by Johns Hopkins University, an increase from 12 states on Monday. Several Midwestern states were among those reporting growing cases— kamagra now co uk Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio and South Dakota. Nationally, however, cases continue to decline, though at a slower pace than reported in previous days.

The U.S kamagra now co uk. Reported an average of 41,638 new infections a day over the last week, a decline of more than 5% compared with the prior week, according to a CNBC analysis of Hopkins' data. Sun Belt states that have spent the summer months grappling with outbreaks are showing signs of improvement.

Texas, Florida, California and Arizona all reported declines greater than kamagra now co uk 15% compared with a week ago. Midwest 'is getting stuck' The nation's top health officials, including White House coronavirus task force members Dr. Anthony Fauci and kamagra now co uk Dr.

Deborah Birx, have warned that hotspots could arise in the Midwest, which hasn't witnessed the worst of the nation's outbreak so far. In July, Fauci pointed to the so-called positivity rate, or the percentage of tests run that are positive, that kamagra now co uk appeared to be rising in those states — an early indication that the outbreak is worsening. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr.

Robert Redfield told Dr kamagra now co uk. Howard Bauchner with the Journal of the American Medical Association last week that there are worrying signs in the middle of the country where cases appear to be plateauing but not falling. The area "is getting stuck," which is a concern as seasonal influenza threatens to overwhelm hospitals and cause preventable deaths, he said.

"We don't need to have a third wave in the kamagra now co uk heartland right now," Redfield said. "We need to prevent that particularly as we're coming to the fall."The virus is likely to spread in rural America, which has been "largely unaffected to date" by the worst of the nation's coronavirus outbreak, and "every community is vulnerable," former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb kamagra now co uk told CNBC last week.

"Really, an outbreak can happen anywhere," he said. State officials have kamagra now co uk taken some action to prevent further spread. Ohio Gov.

Mike DeWine ordered K-12 students to wear face coverings when they return to school and limited the kamagra now co uk events at the state's county fair. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered bars to close in some of the states most populated counties on Thursday and continued to urge residents to wear face coverings, though they're not enforced.

Schools returnThe kamagra now co uk troubling hotspots in the Midwest come as universities try to return students to campus this fall, though some have reported hundreds of cases and students in quarantine only a few weeks into the semester. "People need to understand that there are going to be cases of Covid when you have 50,000 people together," said Dr. Preeti Malani, chief health officer and professor of medicine and infectious disease at the University of Michigan."It's a matter of if you have the infrastructure in place kamagra now co uk to identify cases — testing, surveillance, random testing of asymptomatic people, quarantine, contact tracing, isolation — and you have done what you can to reinforce public health mitigation efforts," she said.

The University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, has reported more than 500 cases since the beginning of this month. The university nearly sent students home before deciding on Friday kamagra now co uk to allow students to return to class once its positivity rate declined from above 10% to nearly 6%. The University of Iowa reported 130 cases after the first week of class for a positivity rate of 13.6%, though the university said it still has "adequate isolation and quarantine housing available." Kansas State University reported an outbreak at four sorority houses on Friday, resulting in more than 20 cases, according to the Riley County Health Department.

The university canceled all kamagra now co uk sorority and fraternity events until Sept. 10. At the University of Kansas, the sorority and fraternity community reported 270 cases for a 10.01% positivity rate, according to an update Friday, though the university said the total cases so far are manageable.

Correction. 21 states and Washington D.C. Are reporting rising coronavirus cases.

A previous version of this story misstated the number of states.Amazon Halo accessory bandsSource. AmazonThis week's launch of the Amazon Halo wearable represents a critical new entrant not only into the health-tech wearable industry, but also into the broader health care ecosystem. Amazon's Halo will compete with Fitbit and Apple Watch, and start-ups like the Oura Ring.

But the device not only allows customers to track things like exercise and sleep, which are common in fitness wearables, but can also track emotional changes by listening to the wearer's tone of voice and can present a 3D body image with a body fat percentage. In a parallel announcement, one of the largest electronic medical record companies, Cerner Corporation, said that users of the Halo device will have the option to upload information collected by the device to their physicians' Cerner health record, beginning with the Sharp Health System in San Diego. These developments potentially represent a step forward for physicians to make use of health data that patients generate on their own. But the new functionality of Halo also raises new privacy implications, which I've spent my career focused on, both at private companies and at the federal government.

A company that has changed our expectations around convenience and personalized recommendations will now be selling a device — and membership — to collect some of the most intimate health details of a person's life. And much of the conversation in the wake of Thursday's announcement has rightly centered on trust as Amazon makes a more direct entry into consumer health care.So going forward, the company would be well-served to keep several key topics in mind:No standard rules for data collection from wearablesIn 2016, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) — the federal government team responsible for health and informatics policy development — delivered a report to Congress highlighting basic legal gaps in consumer protection collected via fitness trackers, compared to devices and systems governed by the rules governing privacy known as HIPAA.I was formerly the Chief Privacy Officer of ONC at the time, and worked on this report.Currently, neither Amazon, nor Apple, nor any other retail fitness tracker is required by federal law to maintain any particular privacy standard. (California residents may benefit, though, from the California Consumer Privacy Act.) This is an important point.

Companies in traditional healthcare — like Cerner or Sharp Health System mentioned earlier — are bound by HIPAA, the nationwide privacy law that applies to health care providers and payers. But some consumer devices, like fitness trackers, may not be.Halo has taken the step of putting control of the collected health data in the hands of the individual, not the company that manufactured the device. Halo even includes a one-way hash that prevents other Amazon business units from using Halo data for other business purposes.

Both of these are important markers for Amazon to lay down as it launches this new business line. But the privacy controls announced by Amazon for Halo are simply provisions in its Terms of Use. Companies like Amazon can change its terms prospectively at any time, so long as they do not mislead or treat consumers unfairly. That's something that people in the privacy world, like myself, will keep an eye on.

Privacy protections for medical records Halo is looking to do more than simply collect data so consumers themselves can review it via an app. Paired with the Cerner announcement, the goal is clearly to achieve interconnectivity or "interoperability," meaning the easy exchange of health information, with clinical technology systems already in use in traditional health care.Apple's HealthKit has been a critical tool in enabling individuals to extract their own data from a doctor's office in a low-friction, mainly automated process, but only using an Apple iOS operating system.Halo appears to be taking a similar approach, but without requiring any specific operating system. This makes it available to a larger potential market.

Having the same privacy practices across all operating systems is a step forward for consumers because it simplifies what they have to keep track of to manage their health information privacy outside their doctor's office.Data from patients' lives can be helpfulPatient-generated health data, or PGHD as it's referred to in the industry, is defined as data inbound from a patient's life into the health care system. How to manage it has been a topic of intense debate among health policy wonks for the last several years. There have been multiple analyses, and calls for more systematic, standards-based, and interoperable ways for consumers to ensure their health care providers have access to important information about patients' lives outside the doctor's office. The potential for this data to deliver context and ultimately better care is immense.

Whether it's social determinants of health, health environmental factors, or simply "what's going on in my life," your physician or care team may be able to use this information to deliver better care for you, and better outcomes across the system. Even during the current pandemic, some physicians and nurses have commented that they've learned a great deal about their patients' lives simply by using telehealth video chats to see into their kitchens.Amazon's Halo, and the company's partnership with Cerner and Sharp, can accelerate these trends — but only if consumers trust the company to be a good steward of their most intimate details. Amazon's early statements on these fronts are encouraging.

But regulators, and the company itself, will need to work collaboratively to make sure that foundation is stable enough on which to build a completely new relationship.Amazon Halo makes great progress on helping consumers use digital tools to collaborate with their health care professionals. But to really fortify consumer trust in digital health, we need a nationwide privacy law that ensures the same protections outside of traditional healthcare as we have for HIPAA.
